Spundpainting is a multidisciplinary live composing sign language created by Walter Thompson in 1974. This technique, which involves a conductor ‘signing’ collaborators (dancers, musicians, actors, etc responding to a vocabulary of over a 1000 signs), challenges traditional composition, promoting a democratic approach to the generation of material and breaking boundaries between art forms.
Since 2010 I collaborate as performer and choreographer with the London Soundpainting Orchestra, which was founded by the musician and composer Diego Ghymers (1976-2015) in 2010. We have worked with major London institutions, such as Shunt, The Southbank Centre, Blackheath Hall and the London Colliseum between 2010 and 2013. Most recently the Orchestra was asked to mentor students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire as part of the CoLab Progam, as well as performing for the Conservatoire.
